=============================
|| Windows Vista Unofficial Help Guide ||
|| for Vista RTM Only ||
=============================

-------------------------------------
TWEAKS AND HACKS
-------------------------------------

Permanent Genuine Activation
------------------------------------
Items in package:
1. OEM Keys
2. OEM Certifications (for Acer, Asus, Dell, Emachine, Getaway, HP, Lenovo, NEC and Sony)
3. OEM Logos (for Abit, Acer, Asrock, Asus, BenQ, Dell, ECS, Futjitsu-Siemens, Gateway, Gigabyte, HP, IBM, Lenovo, MSI, NEC, Neo, Toshiba and Sony)

4. Everest (to check if your BIOS does support SLA 2.0)
5. BIOS emulator ( for those BIOS without SLA 2.0 support)
6. Clear and easy do understand install manual (with screen shots)

What is it?
If you downloaded the Windows Vista retail version DVD media image, or downloaded pirate leaked RTM edition of Windows Vista, or have MSDN release, you will need to import and install Microsoft signed OEM certificate for corresponding OEM-made computer with BIOS that supports SLA 2.0 and build with the SLIC ACPI table from Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus, Acer, Sony or other manufacturers. OEM cert is a requirement for OEM style permanent Windows Vista activation, where users need not to activate online if they have the correct and valid OEM product key. If you downloaded an OEM version of Windows Vista DVD media, the digital certificate is already built-in into the distribution disc.

How do I install the OEM Certificates?
You need to check if the BIOS contains SLIC (Software Licensing Description Table) and RSDT tables by using Everest which you will find in this kit. Run the Everest and look for an entry called ‘’SLIC’’and ‘’RSDT’’ in Motherboard>ACPI. (see screen shot)

If your BIOS if not currently supported, try to upgrade and flash the BIOS to latest version from motherboard manufacturer, should this not work, use the BIOS Emulator (VistaActivator 2.1.2) from this Kit.

Vista OEM certificates for the folowing brands are included in this Kit: Acer, Asus, Dell, Emachine, Gateway, HP, Lenovo, NEC and Sony.
Once you confirm that your motherboard and BIOS has SLIC table in ACPI and you have the OEM certification for your brand, you can proceed with one of the two following methods:

Method 1: OEM activation for during Vista installation:
1. Install any of the following Windows Vista edition:
Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Ultimate
2. During installation, enter the corresponding edition of OEM product key listed in this file (OemKeys.txt) in the folder Oem Keys of this Kit.
3. After installing Windows Vista, open an elevated command prompt with administrator rights and execute the following command to import the correct OEM cert:
slmgr.vbs -ilc oemcert.xrm-ms ‘’Wait until windows pops up with a conformation-message.’’
For example, to import and install a Dell OEM cert for a Dell computer, execute (assuming the OEM cert is located at C: drive:
slmgr.vbs -ilc c:dell.xrm-ms

Windows Vista should be automatically and permanently activated.

Method 2: OEM activation Vista already installed:
1. Open an elevated command prompt with administrator rights and execute the following command to import the correct OEM cert:
slmgr.vbs -ilc oemcert.xrm-ms ‘’Wait until windows pops up with a conformation-message. ‘’
For example, to import and install a Dell OEM cert for a Dell computer, execute (assuming the OEM cert is located at C: drive:
slmgr.vbs -ilc c:dell.xrm-ms

2.Now type "C:windowssystem32slmgr -ipk ". Wait until windows pops up with a conformation-message.
3. Now type "C:windowssystem32slmgr -ato ‘’Wait until windows pops up with a conformation-message.’’
This will activate OEM version of Windows Vista (or Windows Vista as OEM edition) once the digital certificate is loaded.
You are now activated!

How to install OEM Logos?
Double click on the exe file of the brand you want to install, and confirm with yes at the next pop up window. You are done!

How to install the BIOS emulator (Only for those BIOSs without the SLIC table support!!!)
1. Install Windows Vista WITHOUT a key (if already installed, never mind)
2. unpack the complete folder to a folder, say "C:\vistaloader_2.1.2"
3. go to start > all programs > accessoires and rightclick "Command Prompt" > choose "run as administrator" type "C:\vistaloader_2.1.2\install.cmd".
4. Now REBOOT!
5. go to start > all programs > accessoires and rightclick "Command Prompt" > choose "run as administrator" type: "C:\windows\system32\slmgr -ilc c:\vistaloader_2.1.2\dataoemcert.xrm-ms". (oemcert= you have to choose by yourself which brand you want to use) Wait untill windows pops up with a conformation-message. Be sure to use an UNMODIFIED version of slmgr.
6. now type "C:windowssystem32slmgr -ipk ". Wait untill windows pops up with a conformation-message.
7. now type "C:windowssystem32slmgr -ato Wait untill windows pops up with a conformation-message.

DONE, you're activated!

* Some of these programs may not have been tested in Windows XP compatibility mode - try it.

Academic
---------------------
* Maple 9 - Java 1.6 must be installed. Successfully installed using Windows 2000 compatibility mode. When selecting network install and choosing a location for user preferences try typing in the network path manually. Still need to test full functionally of software but so far it starts up. License must have TS_OK flag, all 9.5 and newer 9.0 licenses will have this.

* Maple 10 - Java 1.6 must be installed. Install must be in 2000 compatability mode. License must have TS_OK flag. Java maple sets theme to windows basic, classic maple works fine with Aero.

* Cadence Design Suite - Application functions but has trouble accessing files directories due to Vista's file protections.

Admin
-------------
* Advanced Security Level 5.3 -- Not all options work, must be run as administrator
* EventLog Explorer 2.1 need beta build 2.1.335 to work - download patch in support forum

Antivirus

* Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic v7.03.00.15 -- update function must be manual started as Admin (C:/Program Files/AntiVit/preupd.exe)
* Spyware Terminator 1.8.3.951 -- Works but with problems. Common applications are often unrecognised. Real-Time Shield not fully functional. 'Driver Loading Error' appears. Version 1.9 promises Vista support but no date for its release has been given. See forums for latest.

Audio
-----------------
* Audition v2.0 (does not support Aero. Vista will drop to Basic Color Scheme when Audition 2 is running)
* Total Recorder works with two small problems: 1. Help doesn't work, and 2. Program doesn't work with other programs that can not run without using DirectSound. See link.

* Musicmatch - V10 - Works fine on Vista Business and Vista Ultimate. One setup was a fresh OS install with MM installed afterward. MM had to be re-installed using "recommmended settings", but after that it worked. The other install was an OS upgrade from XP Pro and MM was already on the system. MM fails trying to check for new versions online, but otherwise it works fine.

* Winamp v2.03 (in x32: config screens don't display correctly if Font Size DPI is set higher than the default setting)
* Winamp v5.32 (in x64: 5.1 Surround does not work, annoying Sonic Engine [PX.dll] message, DLL must be manually copied to progdir)

shutdown unwanted services to make pc faster

Go to Start > Run and type services.msc and hit enter.

Scroll down and highlight the service you want to adjust, right-click on it and choose Properties.

Now click the stop button and select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar.

A useful tip is that instead of disabling something you are unsure of, set it to manual. When you restart your machine if that service has started then it is probably required by one of your components or software products. If it is still OFF then consider disabling it for greater protection.

Here’s the list of useless services:

Alerter - notifies selected users and computers of administrative alerts. If this service is turned off, applications that use the NetAlertRaise or NetAlertRaiseEx APIs will be unable to notify a user or computer (by a Message Box from the Messenger service) that the administrative alert took place.
Recommendation: Disabled.

Application Layer Gateway Service - Provides support for 3rd party plug-ins for Internet Connection Sharing/Internet Connection Firewall. Required if using Internet Connection Sharing/Internet Connection Firewall to connect to the internet.
Recommendation: Automatic if using ICS, Disabled if not.

Application Management - Used for Assign, Publish and Remove software services. If you can not modify your software installation of certain applications, put this service in to Automatic or Manual.
Recommendation: Disabled

Automatic Updates - Used to check up to see if there is any critical or otherwise updates available for download. It is very important that if you decide to disable this service, you check the Windows Update site often to ensure the latest patches are installed. Manual (and Automatic) update via Windows Update web site Requires Cryptographic Services to be running.
Recommends: Automatic if you do not wish to use Windows Update manually.

Background Intelligent Transfer Service - Used to transfer asynchronous data via http1.1 servers. According to Microsoft’s site, Windows Update uses this “feature.” It “continues” a download if you log off or shutdown the system (that is, when you log back in.) Manual update via Windows Update web site Requires Cryptographic Services to be running.
Recommendation: Disabled

ClipBook- enables the Clipbook Viewer to create and share “pages” of data to be viewed by remote computers.
Recommendation: Disabled

COM+ Event System - provides automatic distribution of events to subscribing (Component Object Model) COM components.
Recommendation: Disabled

COM+ System Application - provides automatic distribution of events to subscribing (Component Object Model) COM components.
Recommendation: Disabled

Computer Browser - maintains an up-to-date list of computers on your network, and supplies the list to programs that request it. The Computer Browser service is used by Windows-based computers that need to view network domains and resources. Not required unless you attach to a network of Windows computers.
Recommendation: Disabled

Cryptographic Services - Confirms signatures of Windows files. You may always get a dialog box complaining about uncertified drivers if this is disabled. Required for Windows Update to function in manual and automatic mode. Windows Media Player may also require this service to function.
Recommendation: Automatic

DHCP Client - Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol Client manages network configuration by registering and updating IP addresses and Domain Name Server (DNS) names. If you are only dialling up to ISP via modem, cable, etc. If you have a network card in your PC and attach out via a router or sharing device then this may be required. Set to manual if unsure then check on reboot if it has started. If not then disable.
Recommendation : Automatic if required. Disabled if not.

Distributed Link Tracking Client - maintains links between the NTFS file system files within a computer or across computers in a network domain.
Recommendation: Disabled

Distributed Transaction Coordinator - coordinates transactions that are distributed across multiple computer systems and/or resource managers, such as databases, message queues, file systems, or other transaction-protected resource managers.
Recommendation: Disabled

DNS Client - resolves and caches (Domain Name Server) DNS names. The DNS client service must be running on every computer that will perform DNS name resolution.
Recommendation: Disabled

Error Reporting Service - Allows error reporting for services and applications.
Recommendation: Disabled

Event Log -logs event messages issued by programs and Windows. Event Log reports contain information that can be useful in diagnosing problems.
Recommends: Automatic

Recommendation: Leave not installed or Disabled

Telephony - provides Telephony API (TAPI) support for programs that control telephony devices and IP-based voice connections on the local computer and through the LAN on servers that are also running the service. If you never use a dial-up modem on a PC but connect via a router then disable.
Recommendation: Automatic (if using Dial-Up Networking/Faxing/ or PC Phone Services) Disabled otherwise

If this service is not running, you will not be able to run Web, FTP, NNTP, or SMTP sites, or configure IIS. See also World Wide Web Publishing Service. Not usually required unless you are running a local web server. If you are then make sure that if no external access is required that you firewall protect port 80 to only local traffic! Do not even consider running a public web server unless you are 100% sure of the implications - use an ISP server.
Recommendations: Leave not installed or Disabled unless you understand the implications.

IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service - Used for the “drag and drop” CD burn capability. You will need this service to burn CD’s.If you still can not burn a CD with it on Manual, switch to Automatic and feel safe that it will only be used when “needed.”
Recommendation : Disabled if you do not burn CD’s otherwise set to Manual or Automatic.

Indexing Service - indexes contents and properties of files on local and remote computers and provides rapid access to files through a flexible querying language.
Recommendation: Disabled

Internet Connection Firewall and Internet Connection Sharing - provides network address translation (NAT), addressing and name resolution services for all computers on your home or small-office network through a dial-up or broadband connection. Not required unless you are sharing a dial-up connection with other PC’s on your network - not recommended! Far better to use a router or gateway firewall software for this purpose. Consider using a higher specification firewall like Kerio Winroute if sharing your connection.
Recommendation: Automatic if sharing connection, Disabled if not required.

IPSEC Services - manages IP security (IPsec) policy, starts the Internet Key Exchange (IKE) and coordinates IPsec policy settings with the IP security driver. Only leave on if you are using IPSec. Opens Port 500.

Cannot Access Regedit, How to Fix It?

Cannot Access Regedit, How to Fix It?
Many times when working on a computer that has been infected with a virus, trojan, or piece of spyware I find myself with my most important command, Regedit, the Windows Registry Editor being disabled. Virus creators like to disable the Registry Editor so it makes solving the problem and removing the issue difficult.

Sometimes administrators in IT departments may place restrictions on using the regedit command to keep employees from changes things on company computers, but viruses and other issues may also try to disable it.

Listed below you will find the different ways to enable regedit, the Registry Editor.

First we'll begin with the method that appears to work the best.

Method 1 - Enabling the Registry with VBScript

Doug Knox, a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional, has created a VBScript that enables or disables the Registry Editor based on the following location in the registry. Of course, since the registry editor is disabled, you can't change it manually, so Doug wrote a Visual Basic Script to accomplish the task.

HKey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\System\

Visit Doug's page and download Registry Tools VBScripthttp://www.dougknox.com/security/scr...c/regtools.htm to your desktop, double-click on it to run it, then reboot your computer and try to open the Registry Editor.

If this fix didn't solve your problem, try method two shown below.
Method 2: Use Symantec's tool to reset shell\open\command registry keys

Sometimes worms and trojans will make changes to the shell\open\command registry entries as part of their infections. This will cause the virus to run each time you try to run an .exe file such as the Registry Editor. In these cases, visit Symantec's website and download the UnHookExec.inf http://www.symantec.com/security_res...050614-0532-99 file to your desktop. Right-click on it and choose Install. Restart your computer and then try to open the Registry Editor.

Method 3: Rename Regedit.com to Regedit.exe
Some viruses and other malware will load a regedit.com file that is many times a zero byte dummy file. Because .com files have preference over .exe files when executed if you type REGEDIT in the run line, it will run the regedit.com instead of the real regedit.exe file.

Delete the regedit.com file if its a zero byte file to restore access to REGEDIT. In some cases, such as the W32.Navidad worm, you'll need to rename the REGEDIT file to get it to work.

Method 4: Windows XP Professional and Group Policy Editor

If you have Windows XP Professional and access to an administrative user account, you could change the registry editor options in the Group Policy Editor.
1. Click Start, Run
2. Type GPEDIT.MSC and Press Enter
3. Go to the following location
o User Configuration
o Administrative Templates
o System
4. In the Settings Window, find the option for "Prevent Access to Registry Editing Tools" and double-click on it to change.
5. Select Disabled or Not Configured and choose OK
6. Close the Group Policy Editor and restart your computer
7. Try opening REGEDIT again
Although there are a few other ways, the above ways I have used with great success in re-enabling the REGEDIT command. If you are interested in more ways to reactive the REGEDIT command, you may want to visit a site called Killian's Guidehttp://www.geocities.com/kilian00720...ockreg.htm#1.2, that goes into more detail on a variety of ways to get the registry editor to work again
